American Staffing Association - New First Quarter Record
Staffing industry employment set a new first quarter record, according
to data released today by the American Staffing Association.
U.S. staffing firms employed an average of 2.8 million temporary and
contract workers per day from January through March—up 5.5% or nearly
150,000 workers compared with the same period last year.
“The economy is up, unemployment is down, and the demand for talent
is strong,” says ASA president and CEO Richard Wahlquist. “While consumers
are concerned about oil pipelines and prices at the pump, businesses
are becoming increasingly concerned about talent pipelines. Staffing
companies report that recruiting qualified employees will continue to
be their biggest challenge in 2006 as customers increase their orders
for temporary, contract, and permanent help.”
Wahlquist adds, “It’s a good market for job seekers who are looking
for a change and a good market for new grads who are looking to get on
that first rung of the career ladder.”
As in past years, staffing employment in the first quarter was down
slightly from the fourth quarter of 2005, a seasonal trend consistent
with survey data since ASA began tracking industry employment in 1992.
U.S. sales of temporary and contract staffing services totaled $17.5
billion in the first quarter, according to the ASA survey, an increase
of 9.3% over the same period last year.
